Columbia
The value generalist
Who it draws: families, occasional hikers, and buyers shopping a price point rather than a feature list. Columbia covers clothing, footwear, and gear under one roof, which makes it an easy one-stop purchase.
Where it wins: broad sizing, frequent promotions, and a very low barrier to entry. For a first pair of hiking shoes for a teenager, it is a reasonable starting place.
Trade-offs: hiking footwear tends to sit closer to the casual end. Midsole support and outsole durability under repeated heavy use generally fall short of what Merrell's hiking core offers at a similar price.
